Something Stirring Beneath the Floor

At first, nobody noticed the small object lying quietly on the red carpet. Aria barely registered it herself, too consumed by embarrassment and the lingering sting on her cheek to think clearly about anything else. She simply wanted to leave, to disappear from the crowd of judgmental eyes before her composure fully crumbled in front of strangers.

But within seconds, a faint humming sound began to emanate from beneath the marble floor, so subtle at first that most guests dismissed it as background noise from the string quartet or the building's climate system. Aria felt it before she consciously recognized it, a slight vibration traveling up through the soles of her shoes, growing steadily stronger with each passing second.

Camille frowned, glancing downward as the humming intensified into a low mechanical whir, distinctly out of place amid the elegant chandeliers and antique furnishings surrounding them. "What on earth is that sound?" she muttered, more to herself than anyone nearby.

The marble tiles near where the small metallic device had landed began to shift, seams appearing where none had existed moments earlier, hairline cracks of light emerging from beneath centuries-old stone flooring that had clearly been engineered to conceal something far more advanced than anyone in that ballroom could have imagined.

Aria stumbled back a step, her eyes wide with genuine shock, her hand instinctively moving to shield her belly as the floor directly in front of her began to rise. A sleek, futuristic kiosk emerged slowly from beneath the marble, its surface smooth and dark, illuminated by a soft, pulsing blue light along its edges.

Guests nearby gasped audibly, backing away from the rising structure, several reaching for their phones to capture the bizarre, inexplicable scene unfolding in the middle of what had been, until moments ago, an ordinary charity gala. Camille stood frozen, her earlier confidence completely evaporated, replaced by visible confusion and the first flickers of genuine unease.

"What is that thing?" she demanded, though her voice had lost much of its earlier sharpness, uncertainty creeping into every word.
